Bandhas - Locks That Unlock Stuck Energy

The study and practice of Yoga unravels a universe where physicality intersects spirituality, traversing an intricate labyrinth of energies coiling within us. Amidst the various techniques that Yoga has to offer, one tool commonly forgotten is called 'Bandhas,' the energy locks. Bandhas, derived from the Sanskrit word 'Bandha' (बंध), meaning 'to bind' or 'lock,' are the secret keys to unlocking our pent-up energies and directing them towards healing and balance.

In traditional Yoga, Bandhas are seen as locks or barriers, intentionally created to guide the energy flow, much like a dam controls a river's flow. They create a space for stillness and reflection by momentarily halting the flood of energy. And when these locks are released, the ensuing surge of energy flushes out blockages, ensuring a fresh, vital life force that nourishes our body, mind, and spirit.

Bandhas are often introduced during the pranayama practices and Kriyas*. These techniques may initially seem elusive, but with continued practice, they gradually become an integral part of the Yogic journey, accentuating the practice of asana and meditative techniques. The four primary Bandhas in Yoga, each with their specific area of focus and method of engagement, offer benefits from physical rejuvenation to spiritual awakening.

1. Mula Bandha (मूल बंध - Root Lock)

Located at the base of the spine, Mula Bandha is the 'Root Lock' that forms the foundation for energy control. It involves the contraction of the muscles near the pelvic floor; practice drawing the muscles together but also upward, so not a tight down-clenching, more like pulling up on a web to a single point just below the navel. This contraction creates a lock that prevents the downward flow of energy. Regular practice of Mula Bandha can enhance concentration, improve posture, and be profoundly grounding.

2. Uddiyana Bandha (उड्डियान बंध - Upward Flying Lock)

Uddiyana Bandha, the 'Upward Flying Lock', involves a contraction of the muscles in the upper abdomen; by drawing your navel in and up, you direct the energy upwards. Regular engagement of Uddiyana Bandha can improve digestive functions, stimulate the solar plexus chakra, and foster emotional balance. If you are practicing Mula bandha preceding the engagement of Uddiyana Banda, imagine taking the single point of funneled energy from the root lock and drawing it upward and expanding outward like a flower blossoming open.

3. Jalandhara Bandha (जालन्धर बंध - Throat Lock)

The 'Throat Lock', Jalandhara Bandha, entails lengthening the back of the neck while tucking the chin down and in close to the chest; this lock seals the upward-moving energy. This bandha is often combined with certain pranayama and can have soothing effects on the nervous system, regulate the thyroid, and help relieve stress and anger.

4. Maha Bandha (महाबंध - Great Lock) (also called Trayabandha)

The 'Great Lock', Maha Bandha, combines the three Bandhas mentioned above. It involves engaging all three locks sequentially, starting at the root and working upward while retaining the breath; this creates a holistic energy control that can lead to a profound sense of calm and balance.

Bandhas are unique tools of Yoga, holding the potential to unlock stuck energies and facilitate a smoother, harmonious flow. The consistent and mindful practice of Bandhas can lead to the purification of nadis, strengthening of concentration, and regulating of various internal systems, significantly enhancing one's overall Yoga experience.
